Our Story
Every story has a beginning. This is ours…
The Society of Freedmen was founded in 2021 in Athens, GA, and New York, born out of a shared vision to honor our ancestors and empower future generations. Our founders, driven by a deep respect for the resilience and contributions of Black Americans, sought to create a community that celebrates our rich heritage and fosters unity.
“Our strength lies in our unity, our resilience, and our unwavering commitment to each other.”
From the beginning, our mission has been clear: to realign legacy organizations, deepen the understanding of Freedmen and Black American history, and promote cultural, political, and social progress. We are committed to educating our members about the significant contributions and experiences of Black Americans, both during and after colonial America. From the beginning, our mission has been clear: to realign legacy organizations, deepen the understanding of Freedmen and Black American history, and promote cultural, political, and social progress. Since our founding, the Society of Freedmen has grown into a vibrant community of individuals dedicated to preserving our cultural heritage and advocating for justice and equality. We have hosted numerous events, workshops, and seminars that have brought together members from diverse backgrounds to learn, share, and collaborate.
Through our efforts, we have not only educated and empowered our members but also fostered a strong sense of community. Our initiatives in political advocacy, economic empowerment, and cultural preservation have made a tangible impact, helping to strengthen the Freedmen community and promote social cohesion.
Membership is open to individuals who can trace their lineage to Black Americans present during colonial America. Together, we can honor our ancestors, celebrate our culture, and work towards a brighter future.
